Data concerns have been on the minds of users for a long time now. The end-to-end encryption does not seem to do much for the users. However, there are some data-related features that can be very handy for a number of people who are planning on continuing with WhatsApp after the privacy update.

Know Who You Talk to the Most on WhatsApp

You might talk to a number of people on WhatsApp and you can actually see who you have talked to the most. This can also show you the amount of data and media that you have shared with people in your contacts. This way you can see with who and what amount of data have you shared. The option can be toggled by going to Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage > You'll see a list of contacts at the bottom in order of which is using the most storage. This process to reach the information is the same on Android as well as iOS.

Trying out Disappearing Messages

Disappearing messages is a feature that gets rid of any new message after 7 days. This functionality works only on the messages that are sent after turning on this feature. This, however, is not a foolproof thing as screenshots can always preserve those messages and those memories. The way to toggle and activate this is the same for both Android and iOS. Specific chat > Click on the person's name at the top of chat > Disappearing Messages > On.

Keep People From Seeing Your WhatsApp Messages

No one likes people peeking into their phone screens whenever a message notification pops up.  This can be very annoying and can also be considered a breach of privacy. There are options on WhatsApp that can be toggled both on Android and on iOS.

For iOS, you need to go into Settings > Notifications > Toggle off Show Preview / Settings > Notifications > Toggle off Show Notifications.

Android, on the other hand, has a number of option in the app. One of the options is the high priority notifications. High priority notifications are notifications that you would want to see on the panel. This can be done by going to Settings > Notifications > Toggle off Use high priority notifications. Android users can also turn off the notifications from WhatsApp altogether.

Stop Images from Being Visible in Gallery

Sharing images and videos is one of the best features on WhatsApp, but there can be times when you don't feel like having those images in your gallery. In Android, the OS makes a separate folder for all the media received on WhatsApp. iOS just saves all of it in the camera roll. These images and videos can be kept away from the gallery. On iOS, you can go to Settings > Chats > Toggle off Save to Camera Roll. For Android, Settings > Chats > Toggle off Show Media in Gallery, works.

Check Your WhatsApp Data Report

WhatsApp data report shows you details about your data. This can be downloaded from within the app. It doesn't include messages though, for that you need to look at your chat history. You can request the report by following these steps.

This feature is very specific to iOS users. If you tend to forget things and want to keep a note of the event discussed in a specific WhatsApp chat, you can create a reminder in the calendar. This can be done by pressing and holding the date within chat > Create Event.
