WD Red NAS 6 TB NAS Hard Drive is engineered to work with NAS devices. It can be installed with most of common NAS devices easily that supports 6TB drives. The drive can be used over RAID technology that allows you to access both 6 TB drives as one. WD developed 'NASware 3.0' that optimizes WD Red for the NAS environment with added support for 6 to 8 NAS bays and it also supports small NAS systems from 1 to 8 bays. NASware also prevents hard drives from being dropped off the RAID due to extended error recovery. This feature provides more availability and less down time when rebuilding the RAID.
The low-powered 3.5" hard drive can be configured in both RAID 0, for better performance and storage space, and RAID 1, which protects data against a single drive failure. We received two 6 TB drives for review, configuring them was quite easy as well as both drives performed well in different RAID configuration.
We tested the drive in both RAID 0 and RAID 1 and it was quite fast. To test the drive, we used a standard system comprising of a 3.0 GHz AMD Athlon II X2 250 CPU on Gigabyte motherboard, 4 DDR3 Kingston RAM, WD 500GB SATA HDD, Phillips LED monitor running on Windows 7 OS. We transferred 10 GB of assorted files and folders from the drive to our test system to check for speed, the drive took 2 min 27 seconds to complete the transfer with read speed of 244MBps. Also when copying from source drive to HDD it delivered write speed of 155 MBps and completed the transfer in 2 minutes 31 sec. We also run HD Tune Pro, resulted with 273.4 MBps max read speed and CrustalDikMark, resulted with 251.4 read Mbps and write speed 155.8 Mbps.
