The Seagate Seven portable hard drive comes with a storage capacity of 500 GB. The USB 3.0 compatible Seagate Seven is only 7 mm thick, which means it easily fits into a pocket or purse. Inside the Seven is Seagate's ultra thin 5 mm hard drive, which is encased in 2 mm of stainless steel for protection. The Seagate seven enclosure is made entirely of steel, not only to achieve the thinnest external drive, but also for a premium appearance.
Its stainless steel design is simple but may not be appealing to all people due to its minimal, unfinished look, and it's worth noting that the casing has a tendency to attract fingerprints. The drive itself feels well built and it can withstand scratches, but it's still susceptible to drops. There's an indicator light located on the front of the hard drive, which glows blue when it is connected to a computer. The Seagate Seven ships with a high-quality fabric encased USB cord, but at 12 inches, the cord can feel too short when it's used on a large desk.
It includes preloaded Seagate dashboard software, which allows user to protect and backup their content on both computer and mobile devices. A mobile app for both ios and android is also available, allowing user to use their WiFi and clouds service for backups.
In our tests, the Seagate Seven gave average write speeds of approximately 100.7MB/s and read speeds of 101.8 MB/s, which is at par with other USB 3.0 drives.
