Nikon brings the Coolpix S9700 for those who desire for compact yet longer zoom camera. This new member of Nikon family is lightweight and has been crafted beautifully. With the pocket-friendly form factor, it has 30X zoom lens, full manual control options and integrated GPS and Wi-Fi.
Look and Feel: Nikon has kept both build quality and looks in mind while designing S9700. The pop-up flash is placed on the top left, but no button is available to operate it manually, it will pop-out automatically when needed or when flash has been set up. Top panel has shutter release button wrapped with a zoom rocker, and shooter mode selection roller. At the rear, it has a 3-inch wide viewing angle OLED display and few other buttons for additional settings. The camera suffices the desire of longer zoom lenses without increasing its body size or weight and without compromising with image or video quality.
Bundled with features: The Coolpix S9700 boasts a 30x optical zoom lens with a 25-750mm equivalent range, coupled with a 16 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor. It is fitted with 5-axis Hybrid VR (Vibration Reduction) that enhances the sharpness of photos and videos. The VR combines optical and electronic image stabilisers. Whether you click an image at full zoom or even in no light, the Pre-AF shortens the autofocus time and delivers high quality crisp images. It comes with Nikon’s Smart Portrait System that includes Smile Timer, Blink Proof and Red-Eye Fix features.
The Coolpix S9700’s built-in Wi-Fi enables you to click self-portraits using the smart device as a remote control. As well as upload and share your images instantly with friends and family via social channels or email. Also, you can add accurate location information in each image using the GPS and GLONASS function.
The handheld shooter: The S9700 is coupled with the back-illuminated sensor technology reducing the noise even in full zoom and low light. With the ISO sensitivity ranges from 125 to 6400, it delivers quality images. At the ISO 125 to 800, you would find noise free sharp images with rich colors. Above ISO 800, a little drop in quality and smudges in colors can be seen. Moving on to ISO 1600 noise would start affecting the photos.
With the 25-750 mm focal range in 35mm terms, it is capable enough to capture life moments and incredible macro shots from 1cm distance. The night shots were quite detailed though a little noise was visible, when clicked in night scene mode, but manual ISO settings can enhance the night image quality. Overall this is an incredible camera with the only shortfall which I came across was chromic aberration, which again can be managed through manual ISO settings.
Power packed battery: The S9700 includes Li-ion battery, which is quite good in terms of backup. It allows clicking of more than 670 shots in one full charge. Using the Wi-Fi and GPS reduces the count to over 460 shots (depending on usage and lighting condition).
