Windows 11 has been rumoured and leaked for quite some time now. Even though Microsoft said that there would be no successor to the Windows 10, the launch of a new operating system has been confirmed. The event on 24 June 2021 confirmed the launch of Windows 11. What are the changes that the company is bringing, and how will the experience differ?
The Changes
The first change comes in the start menu. The start menu on Windows 11 has been moved to the centre. This was seen in the leaks and that change has been sustained in the final version of the same. It also comes with widgets as seen in the leaks. The task bar at the bottom looks very similar to the one in MacOS.
Multitasking has been enhanced on Windows 11. It is more touch friendly and the snap layouts make it easier to multitask. Two apps can now be used side by side. The new Windows 11 is also more touch friendly now. Snap layouts lets users choose from different layouts when opening multiple apps on Windows 11. Windows will also register the layouts that you choose to make accessibility easier. The snap groups will keep a record of the apps you were working on before being interrupted by a call or a text.
Vertical tabs on the Microsoft Edge browser make switching between tabs much easier. Users can also create different desktops for different work. This can range from productivity, gaming or just leisure. With this, your tasks won't be overlapping each other.
Microsoft Teams will come integrated in Windows 11. This will allow users to call or message anyone. It won't matter what device they are on and this extends to Mac users as well.
There are a number of more touch friendly features on Windows 11. The OS will work better in the touch mode especially when the user is using a surface device. With Windows 11, Microsoft is enabling Haptics to make using the pen easier.
Gaming on Windows 11
Microsoft announced Auto HDR for gaming on Windows 11. This will enhance the gaming experience for users and make the visuals crisper. Over 1000 games will be automatically enhanced on Windows 11 devices which support Auto HDR. Microsoft aslo mentioned that top performing PCs will work better with Windows 11 with the introduction of direct storage on Windows 11. This is the same technology that has been used by Microsoft for Xbox. Additionally, Xbox game pass will be built directly into Windows 11 with the Xbox app.
The Apps
Microsoft is expanding their inventory of apps with Windows 11. Multiple new apps like TikTok will be available on the Microsoft Store. Not just that, users will also be able to use Android apps on the new OS. Integrated apps will bring these apps to the platform.
Developing on Windows 11
Microsoft is taking a step further to unlock new opportunities for creators and developers by creating a more open ecosystem with Windows 11 that will benefit developers and bring more apps, games, movies, shows, and web content to users where:
- Developers and independent software vendors apps (ISVs) can bring in their apps to the Microsoft Store regardless of the app framework they are built on, such as Win32 or Progressive Web App (PWA).
- A progressive change to Microsoft's revenue share policies means that developers can keep 100% of their commerce revenue. App developers can still use Microsoft's commerce ecosystem with a competitive revenue share of 85/15.
