Mi Mix Fold: Initial Impressions and Technical Specs

Folding phones are the thing of the future and using them makes you feel like experiencing a piece of what is yet to come to the markets. Brands like Samsung have already made their presence felt in the folding smartphones market along with the likes of Motorola. Xiaomi is not very behind in the race, the brand has launched the new Mi Mix fold. Let's see what it has to offer to the consumers.

In the Box

The phone comes in a big box that comes with the branding of Mi Mix. The box comes with a VIP warranty card, along with the phone that is packed in the folded state. There are 3 sections in the box that can be seen on removing the phone. The first section has a 2-part case for the folding phone. Along with that there is an adapter in the box that is a 67W fast charger along with a USB A-USB C cable, a SIM ejector tool and an adapter to connect standard earphones.

Physical Overview of the Mi Mix Fold

The phone is wrapped in a plastic packaging that has a warranty void seal on it. The first look gives a premium feel and is considerably heavy but the flap is very smooth. The thickness resembles a TV remote, and it weighs more than 300 grams. On the right, there is a power lock-unlock button which also works as the integrated fingerprint scanner. Above that, the volume rockers are present on the same side of the phone. On the other side of the phone, the dual-SIM tray can be seen. There are a total of 4 speakers with 2 being on top of the phone and 2 being on the bottom of it which are tuned by Harman Kardon that can deliver good sound quality. The top of the phone has a secondary microphone and the Xiaomi special IR blaster. The left side of the phone is all hinge which has "Innovation for Everyone" inscribed on it. The hinge looks very similar to the first generation Samsung Galaxy Fold. The bottom of the phone has 2 speakers, primary microphone and the USB port.

On the backside, the company gives you the option to choose between glass or ceramic back. The triple rear camera setup comes with the liquid lens camera set up. The primary camera an 108-megapixels shooter accompanies by 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an 8-megapixel lens that can be used for macro shots as well as 3x optical zoom.

Screens and Displays

The screen is a 27:9 aspect ratio long display with the resolution of 840x2520 pixels. The screen is AMOLED and comes with Gorilla Glass protection. The small and tall screen also has a refresh rate of 90Hz. The primary 8-inch screen is also an AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The primary screen does not have any camera module. The phone gives a proper phablet feels to the users. The video playback experience is also very good and users can switch between the displays while being in the middle of a video.

Technical Specs of Mi Mix Fold

The phone runs on the typical MIUI by Xiaomi. The version on-board is the latest MIUI 12.5. It draws its processing power from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and runs on top of Android 11. The phone is available in 12 and 16 GB RAM variants with 256 and 512 GB storage options. The 5020mAh battery that can be charged with the 67W fast charger. The phone comes with all the typical Xiaomi options. The music playback comes with a lot of depth and bass thanks to the 4 stereo speakers and Harman Kardon's technology.

The Hinge

The hinge on the Mi Mix Fold is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the T-points used on the phone are the same and the mechanism is also very similar. It is a first generation phone and Xiaomi will hopefully make more changes to the hinge mechanism in the upcoming renditions of the phone.

The phone is yet to be launched in India, and we will have to wait and see if and when it launches in the market.
