Chinese tech company, Huawei, is set to enter the electric automobile industry and some models might be announced or even launched by the end of 2021. Going by the reports of GSMArena, Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group, who was responsible for the company's incredible rise in the smartphone market is said to shift gears and focus on electronic vehicles targeting the mass-market segment.
Huawei is also in talks with BAIC Group's BluePark New Energy Technology, a Beijing backed company, to manufacture electronic vehicles. Rumours of Xiaomi planning to build its own car and is considering it as a strategic decision. The specific details and the path the company is planning on taking is yet to be determined.
The project leadership might be taken over Xiaomi's current CEO, Lei Jun, and he will be directly heading it. Lei Jun visited the US twice to meet Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, back in 2013. It seems that the company has finally decided to work on the ideas and inputs he got from there.
The trend is being followed by most tech giants since Apple dropped hints about their car and the features that it would come with. This, now, seems like a race to innovation and whichever company successfully executes this idea will become a part of the history and would rewrite the innovation in the electronic vehicle segment.
India is also becoming a booming marketplace for electronic vehicles with automobile giants like Tata and Mahindra coming out with the e-vehicles. Keeping in mind the popularity of Huawei and Xiaomi have in the country, it can be a good place and market for them to start with.
