Epic Games made a public announcement on their Fortnite website and on Twitter to inform players worldwide that the release of season 3 of Fortnite will be put on hold. According to a statement released by Epic along with the announcement, this time the delay is due to “recent events,” which Epic says, “are a heavy reminder of ongoing injustices in society, from the denial of basic human rights to the impact of racism both overt and subtle against people of color.” This comes at the heels of Call of duty and many other games putting new seasons and releases on hold due to the protests against the killing of Floyd in the united states. Epic Games said in the blogpost that the teams need to “focus on themselves, their families, and their communities”. It added that the live event called ‘The Device' and Season 3 will be pushed back to June 15 and June 17 respectively.
Many other tech giants and game makers are taking a stand in solidarity with the protesters against racism and police brutality in the US. Google has postponed the release of Android 11 and Call of Duty mobile has also put the release of season 7 on indefinite hold. CD Projekt Red has postponed the release of the most anticipated game of the year Cyberpunk 2077 till June 25. Many organizations have also changed their online avatars and profile photos to show support to the protestors. Call of duty also posted on twitter that they will be taking action against players who engage in racist behavior in the game. Sony has also put its PS5 release events on hold for the time being. Microsoft has also released a statement saying that the organization stands with the protestors and the people of color in their fight against racism. Many tech companies have also donated to Black lives matter with Facebook donating $10 million.
