In a sad development, Park Jun-Kyu, the CEO of Riot Games Korea, passed away today. It was revealed by the company that the cause of his demise was Liver Cancer.
Park Jun-Kyu assumed the position of the CEO on January 1, 2019. He joined Riot Korea in 2014, where he was the head of their publishing team. As the CEO of Riot Korea, he was responsible for League of Legends esports and also oversaw the release of Riot’s new games earlier this year.
It has been revealed that he had been battling Liver Cancer for the major part of last year, yet carried on working with Riot until the end of 2019. Riot has announced that he passed away due to health issues, and nothing has been decided as of yet regarding his position.
Many heartfelt messages and condolences poured out on Reddit’s League of Legends community in his honour. A user Chris Smith, General Manager of 100 Thieves’ League of Legends, also offered condolences, saying:
"I knew the Riot KR CEO as Jaysen and he was a super friendly, approachable guy who was very interested in working with the global casters to find ways to make the LCK broadcast better for the English fans.
Had no idea about his medical struggle and thus today comes out of nowhere. Rest in Peace and my thoughts go out to his family and friends."
May he rest in peace.
