Apple Releases iOS Update 17.1.2: All You Need to Know

The September-unveiled iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 platforms now have a small upgrade available on iOS 17.1.2 and iPadOS 17.1.2 from Apple. These updates come after the release of iOS 17.1.1, which was also a bug-fix release.

On eligible iPhones and iPads, users may acquire the iOS 17.1.2 and iPadOS 17.1.2 updates by going to General > Software Update in the Settings app. iOS 17.1.2, as stated in Apple's release notes, is mostly focused on important security improvements, including fixing flaws that may have been exploited in earlier iterations of iOS.

What were the issues reported among users?

However, problems have been reported with the latest update. As reported by GottaBeMobile, the iOS 17.1.2 update presents challenges for some iPhone users. Some of these issues appeared recently, while others continued from previous iOS 17 versions. The current list of issues with iOS 17.1.2 includes rapid battery drain, Bluetooth issues, Wi-Fi issues, Exchange issues, and issues with first and third-party apps,  the report added.

This update is available for multiple devices including iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later.

In addition, Apple has identified security holes related to the processing of online content that could lead to the disclosure of sensitive information. Notably, it has been reported that these issues could be exploited in iOS versions before iOS 16.7.1.  

The first security issue identified by WebKit Bugzilla as #265041 and assigned CVE-2023-42916 involves out-of-bounds reading. Apple addressed this issue by improving input validation. Another vulnerability, described in WebKit Bugzilla as #265067 and named CVE-2023-42917, is related to a memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple solved this problem by introducing improved locking mechanisms.

According to the Californian giant, users are encouraged to quickly update their devices to iOS 17.1.2  to ensure that they benefit from the latest security improvements and protect their devices from possible explosions.
