Although development on Apple's first mixed reality headset, called Vision Pro, the spatial computer as it wants to be called, is still proceeding, the device was introduced in June. It was originally scheduled for release in January, but according to sources, it is now more likely to arrive in March.
Apple has given a general release schedule for the headgear since its announcement at WWDC 2023, saying that it would go on sale in early 2024. In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman of Blomberg predicts that Vision Pro will likely debut sometime in March and around. That's the strongest time frame yet for the $3,499 headset.
Gurman says Apple planned to release Vision Pro in January 2024, but the company is still behind on its distribution plans and final testing. Apple reportedly sells the Vision Pro on contract at its retail stores and on its website. The headset is not available from third-party partners, as Apple wants to closely monitor Vision Pro adoption.
Apple Vision Pro is expected to be released around March 2024
Vision Pro has multiple SKUs, including prescription lenses and different sizes of headbands, making inventory difficult for many brick-and-mortar stores. Apple has been slowly preparing to release Vision Pro - the latest visionOS beta has the basics, including videos, while the iOS 17.2 beta has Vision Pro features like AirPlay receiver and status video support for iPhone 15 Pro models.
Apple Vision Pro affordable version
While the Vision Pro is not yet on the market, Apple is already working on a more affordable version of the MR headset (codenamed Project Alaska), and the company is expected to launch it in late 2025 or early 2026. The low-cost version of the Vision Pro could compete directly with Samsung's upcoming MR headset, called the XR headset, which the Korean tech giant is developing in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.
