Over the years Google has always named its different versions of Android on a sweet delicacy. In the days of Samsung Galaxy Y, the android version was Gingerbread. Then there was Jelly bean, KitKat, Oreo, Nougat, and Pie. However, when Google brought android 10 they dropped this tradition of naming Android versions after sweet delicacies. Android 10 was launched as just android 10. Though it seems that dropping those sweet names for android versions was just done for the outside world.
Android VP Dave Burke told on a podcast that the new Android 11 is called RVC or Red Velvet cake internally by Google. He also said that engineers who are working on this new version of Android 11 call it Red velvet cake. Sadly, he also said that the name will only be an internal name in Google and it will be called Android 11 when it launches. When Google decided to drop the tradition of naming Android OS after delicacies and sweet it made a lot of users unhappy. Having a smartphone that is running on Nougat or Pie was considered cool. In the early days of android, the OS was only being used by enthusiasts and power users but as time progressed and Android became the standard in most smartphones in the world Google decided to stop naming the new android versions. Many have said that the move was done by Google execs to position Android in the markets as a serious and professional OS.
Apple's iOS is the biggest competition that Google has to Android. Unlike Google, Apple doesn't use any names for the different iOS versions. Apple did call the new MacBook update the "BIG SUR" which was a play on the words Big Sir. Microsoft has always named Windows after numbers. From Windows 95, 98, and 2000 till they switched to using letters for a brief period which resulted in Windows XP and Vista. After that, even Microsoft has been sticking with numbers with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.
