Amazon India today revealed the findings of its ‘Great Indian Mobile Survey’. With close to 60,000 respondents from tier 1, tier 2 & 3 cities and towns, the survey provides insights on customer preferences for smartphones this festive season. The Great Indian Mobile Survey was taken by close to 60,000 customers on the mobile category page on Amazon.in in September 2020.

As per the findings of the Great Indian Mobile survey, 38% of respondents are looking to buy a mid-range smartphone between INR 15,000 – INR 25,000, making it the most desired price point for the festive season. Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi emerged as the most preferred smartphone brands, with over 50% of respondents looking to buy Samsung mobile phones followed by OnePlus & Xiaomi. OnePlus Nord, Samsung Galaxy M51, and Redmi Note 9 series top the popularity chart among the respondents.
With regards to product attributes, camera, battery capacity, display quality, RAM and fast charging (in this order) are the top features determining purchase decisions. More than 42% of respondents prefer 64MP cameras in their mobile phones followed by 24% who are inclined towards a 32MP-48MP camera.
The survey also reveals interesting insights on respondents’ preferences for phone configuration More than 44% of respondents are looking for 6 GB of processing speed (RAM) followed by 29% of respondents looking for 8 GB and above. 5000-5999 mAh battery emerged as the most considered battery capacity with more than 39% of respondents choosing to buy phones powered with it. More than 56% of respondents are willing to choose 128 GB memory capacity (ROM) and 72% prefer Snapdragon as their desired processor.
During the festive season, more than 44% of respondents are looking to buy a phone with 6" - 6.5" display size screen and 71% prefer AMOLED display for a richer viewing experience. More than 54% of respondents prefer punch-hole display followed by notch-less display. Over 37% of respondents looking to choose a phone with under-display fingerprint sensor and more than 38% prefer a 90Hz display refresh rate.
With the impact of COVID-19 on disposable incomes, customers prefer no-cost EMI and other affordable finance options which allow them to buy their desired phone without worrying about high interest rate or paying upfront. More than 32% of respondents are looking forward to buying phones on no-cost EMI, this festive season. Others finance offers like instant bank discounts, exchange offers, and screen protection & insurance are also considered by customers. Over 22% of respondents are looking for lucrative exchange offers and 30% are looking to avail instant bank discounts and cashback. The survey also indicated an emerging trend of customers preferring 5G ready phones which are future ready.
