McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i

Saturday, December 09, 2006

Today enterprises face constant threats from new and dangerous viruses and malware. As a result, they not only need protection from viruses but also from spywares and Trojans, which constantly get downloaded from the Internet. In most cases, Trojans and ad-wares don't show virus like patterns and so common antiviruses are not able to detect them. But in McAfee VirusScan, we have an in-built ad-ware and malware removal utility along with antivirus. The ad-ware removal tool is not enabled by default and you have to manually turn it on after you have installed the antivirus.

Price: Not Availalble
Meant For: Mid-sized enterprises
Key Specs: Antivirus, protection for buffer overflow attacks
Contact: McAfee, Mumbai

You can do it by clicking on the McAfee icon on the task bar and selecting the VirusScan console, and double clicking on the Unwanted Program Policy. Now you can enable the pre-created policies from this interface. It also facilitates you to create your own policies from the same interface.

The other interesting feature of the software is the ability to stop buffer-flow attacks. You can configure this from the same console window.

Its installation is very simple and can be done by just a few clicks. It requires around 35 MB of free disk space to get installed. To test the antivirus, we installed it on top of a P-IV machine with 512 MB RAM and attacked the machine with around 10,000 odd files, which included a set of macro, system, boot sector and malware infections. It also has a set of multilevel zipped files with multiple viruses. The antivirus was able to detect around 18,000 files (including multiple infected files in the zipped files) which is one of the highest rate of detection in our test bed.

Bottom Line: A good antivirus solution for enterprises, given its virus detection and spyware protection capabilities

With McAfee you can create your own policy for unwanted programs or use a pre-existing policy which suits your requirements
